Back then, when nuns still wore wimples
and little boys riding bikes tossed the latest
news onto the smiling porches of their neighbors,

When honest tradesmen brought us fresh eggs,
Grade A milk, wholesome bread; bore clean laundry
and modern household products right to the door,

When each day the same postman delivered the
mail—everyone knew his name—we were sure that
a world so prodigal must contain countless futures,
all of them splendid, all of them ours.
